I'm thinking about what it is to be a celebrant today. What exactly is the reason someone would choose to have one? All the reasons for choice and individuality make complete sense and the fact that you can do it wherever you like, how you like. But more and more people ask me, why can't you marry a couple legally? Right now the law does not permit us to do this. For a prospective couple, this can come as a surprise, the assumption is that if I'm qualified to " marry you " then surely that's enough. Unfortunately, that is not the case. (sad face) I want my couple to still feel excited about their wedding/ceremony and the disappointment that they may feel on hearing this is real. I know I am able to hold them in this and reassure them that their day will be a completely wonderful thing still. A legal marriage or partnership is, really important and necessary when children and property or assets are involved, but I also think that being lawfully married is still, very relevant for people, and it is universally recognised as something that is genuine and official. For this reason, supporting the changes to Wedding Law Reform is so crucial to our industry right now. As a community, we need to raise awareness of celebrant-led weddings. Speak to our local MPs, and media, and ask couples to share stories. Independent Celebrants provide a fully bespoke, made-to-measure ceremony. That is free from any ties to any specific belief or faith. It can literally be whatever you want it to be. Dress up as Kermit and Miss Piggy if you want. It truly celebrates and recognizes everyone. it does not and should not discriminate. The current law is outdated and not fit for enough purpose. it does not fit in society today in 2023. We are being left behind whilst the rest of the world forges ahead. So let's shout it from the rooftops.
